As befits the season, we put on our Sunday Best [tm] this morning, went out for breakfast, and on to Slate Run, where we saw the usual complement of Canada geese, mallards, and swallows, as well as a couple of new arrivals: a solitary yellowlegs and a lone killdeer scrounging in the mud along the edge of the ponds.

Also: one sandhill crane came in for a silent landing and almost immediately disappeared into the vegetation, looking up only once or twice before we couldn’t see him/her anymore.

After a brisk, near-freezing morning photo-walk through the Old Man’s Cave area, we picked up the pace and hiked from Old Man’s Cave to Cedar Falls to Ash Cave and back, returning home just in time to do a little yarn shopping and dinner with friends. Wonderful day!

We went to the gym and, when it still hadn’t rained, made a quick trip out to Glacier Ridge before the usual Sunday erranding.

Another beautiful, if brisk, morning at Slate Run.

During our first circuit in the wetland after we arrived, we heard the sandhill cranes calling and saw one fly overhead, but it wasn’t until a couple of hours later, after hiking through the rest of the park, that we finally caught a glimpse of them on the ground, in the same general area where we suspect they nested last year.

For the rest of our hike, we contented ourselves with other sightings, including a few coots and miscellaneous ducks, small amphibians and insects and plants.
