Craning
Sunday, April 29th, 2012242/365-3
After yesterday afternoon’s willet extravaganza, I figured we wouldn’t have any luck seeing anything interesting at Slate Run today, but, to my pleasant surprise, we heard the sandhill cranes as soon as we got out of the car, and quickly spotted them foraging around the edge of a pond (additional photos in the comments).
I’m not sure how (or whether) their nest is faring, but the Canada geese were herding goslings in just about all of the ponds. We also saw a pair of yellowlegs fly by, as well as a pair of coots, a pair of wood ducks, and a pair of blue-winged teal. “You realize,” JMK says, “that this is Stage-3 Birding behavior.”
In all, a wonderful weekend, with today’s hike, yesterday’s trip to the museum and yet another little thing I could photograph on my hand.
