Morning Light on Birch Creek (1)

I actually had in mind to go back out to Highbanks today, and finish out this year of photos with a recreation of Day 1…. But then we got up early this morning and it was such a beautiful day, we thought to do a longer hike and headed west. We managed to be on the trail at Glen Helen by 8:30 a.m., which is likely our earliest start there, and were treated to some lovely morning light and quiet, and scads of spiderwebs between the trees.
Later on, long after the end of the magical morning light, we saw a Great Blue heron swoop in overhead, its gangly feet already down for landing; it paused on the bank opposite until our papparazzi efforts proved too bothersome. Those things are just all neck and gawky teenage limbs.
We’d been planning all along to have lunch at Young’s Golden Jersey Inn — sweet potato bread! ice cream! milkshakes! french fries! — after the hike, but it was crazy-busy (we assume with Fathers’ Day traffic, primarily) when we arrived a little after 1:00 p.m.; we didn’t think we could stand a 45-minute wait, so we headed back to Columbus and ended up at a Steak ‘n’ Shake, which was a pretty decent substitute in a pinch.
All in all, a fabulous way to round out the weekend and finish this project.
