We went up to Mansfield to do a little hiking and maple-syrup-shopping at Malabar Farm and to visit the Ohio Bird Sanctuary, where you can hand-feed mealworms to a variety of songbirds for $0.25/cup. They also have a number of raptors along with other birds in the process of being rehabilitated, and lovely grounds with some hiking trails.

We had a lazy day today, but still managed to get out for a brief walk at Prairie Oaks Metro Park, where we were surprised to see a number of killdeer and spotted sandpipers in amongst the red-winged blackbirds. We also saw what I’m pretty sure was a common loon flying overhead — only the second I’ve ever seen in person.

The weather was perfect for hiking today, so we went out to the Brown County State Park — a new hiking venue for us — and tried out a couple of trails. After a false start down a trail overgrown with poison ivy, we had a wonderful morning and would definitely visit again.

Today, our road trip to Bloomington took us on a secondary road trip to Columbus, Indiana. We’d hoped to be able to catch a tour of Columbus’ apparently-famous architecture, but learned after we arrived that the visitors’ center was closed in honor of Mothers’ Day. We walked around for a while, admiring the shop windows and some of the buildings, and then made our way to Nashville — Nashville, Indiana, that is, where we’d hoped to do a little fine-craft shopping.
